Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)

  • These are the fundamental self-care tasks that we learn as young children. They are sometimes referred to as Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADLs).

  • Here are the Key ADLs.

Walking (Ambulating): Moving around the home or outdoors.

Feeding: The ability to het food from a plate into one's mouth.

Dressing and Grooming: Selecting clothes, putting them on, and managing personal appearance.

Toileting: Includes getting to and from the toilet, using it appropriately, and cleaning oneself.

Bathing: Washing one's face and body in the bath or shower.

Transferring: Moving from one body position to another, such as getting out of bed or standing up from a chair.

  • People’s independence with ADLs can vary, from needing minimal assistance (like a reminder) to full dependency where others perform the task for them.
